Abstract

Innovative, cheap and effective methods of purifying and cleaning wastewater before discharging into any other water systems are needed. A combined magnet and electrocoagulation technology was designed to remove suspended solid from wastewater. Magnetic and EC treatments for water and wastewater attract a special attention due to their safety, ecological purity, environmental friendly and simplicity. This study is to investigate the effect of magnetic and electrocoagulation process. Wastewater sample was made from milk with concentration 700 mg/L, treated by using acetic acid (vinegar) as pH adjusment and electrolyte. This model will identify effect magnetic field or electrocoagulation on sedimentation or settling process of suspended solid in wastewater. The results suggest that using a combined magnet plus EC process obtain result better than without magnet.

REDUCTION OF SUSPENDED PARTICLES AND ORGANIC CONCENTRATION UNDER MAGNETIC FIELDS UP TO 5500 GAUSS

Abstract

The influence of magnetic fields on the behavior of suspended particles and organic concentration in wastewater was studied in order to clarify the interaction mechanism of dynamic movements with magnetic fields and to broaden the basic understanding of particle interaction and biological effects of magnetic fields. A home-made magnetic device was built with permanent magnets. Its efficiency was evaluated by measuring the remaining suspended particles and organic concentration at the output the device by means of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Turbidity, BOD5 and COD test. The variation of the efficiency of the magnetic treatment was studied when the magnetic field strength and the flow rate of reduction of suspended particles and organic concentration in the device. The samples were circulated at a magnetic intensity between 0 to 5500 Gauss through a permanent magnetic tube for several hours. Results show reduction of suspended particles and organic concentration increase as the magnetic field strength and exposure time are increased.

ELECTROCOAGULANT PROCESS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Abstract

Electrocoagulation (EC) technology is an electrochemical method of treating polluted water whereby sacrificial anodes corrode to release active coagulant precursors into solution. Accompanying electrolytic reactions evolve gas at the cathode. This paper reports preliminary stage from a study that combined magnetic field and EC technology for removal suspended solid in wastewater treatment. The experiments carried out in this work were setup into static methods. This study is to investigate the effect of EC process. Wastewater sample was made from milk with concentration 700 mg/L, treated by using vinegar as pH adjusment and electrolyte. This model will identify effect of electrocoagulation on sedimentation or settling process of suspended solid in wastewater. Results shown that SS and turbidity removal increase as the DC current and operating time are increased.

EFFECT OF pH AND MAGNETIC EXPOSURE TIME IN ENHANCEMENT OF LEACHATE SEDIMENTATION

ABSTRACT: The magnetic treatment of wastewater is an alternatively simple approach by which the wastewater being treated flow through a magnetic field, and consequently changes some of its physicochemical properties such as suspended particles. The study on the reduction of suspended particles in leachate sample was investigated. The leachate sample containing 589 mg/L of suspended solids were uniformly circulated at flow rate of 2 mL/s through magnetic field 0.55 T of strength. The sample were flown was recirculated through the magnetic field for a spitted hours. The pH of leachate sample was adjusted in the range of 3 to 8 and the magnetic exposure time was adjusted in the range of 30 minutes to 5 hours. It was found that the suspended solids concentrations increased as the pH and magnetic exposure time were increased. The reduction efficiencies were in the range of between 0.4 and 0.7. As a conclusion that pH and magnetic exposure time play an important role in the suspended solids reduction using magnetic treatment.

Abstrak

Permintaan kepada pemurnian air sisa domestik dan industri bagi menghindari pencemaran alam sekitar terutamanya pencemaran bekalan air minum adalah menjadi isu nasional dan internasional. Kajian pelbagai kaedah untuk mendapatkan air yang murni, bersih dan selamat digunakan, telah banyak dilakukan. Kertas kerja ini akan membentangkan salah satu kaedah pembersihan air, iaitu menggunakan salah satu kaedah medan magnet dan elektrokoagulasi. Kajian tertumpu kepada kesan magnet terhadap pemendapan pejal terampai di dalam air, dan perubahan kekeruhan. Keputusan kajian mendapati bahawa pengurangan pejal terampai daripada 272 mg/L kepada 60 mg/L dan perubahan kekeruhan daripada 430 NTU kepada 117 NTU. Penemuan ini sungguh bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan prestasi loji-loji pembersihan air.
